DIY: Spice Rack

Hello and good morning! So, I might have woken up on the couch this morning... with the tv still on... with my glasses slopped across my face (I wear contacts if ya didn't know) ... AND late to work. BUT - despite my rude awakening - it's going to be a great day! You know why? Because today is Friday and that means it's almost the weekend! Woohoo! I'm heading up to my parent's house in Knoxville, TN this weekend to hang out with family and do some awesome crafting with my mom. (She is the ultimate crafter and the one who taught me to love projects - three cheers for mom!)

Today I have for you a fun DIY project and then later I will share with you some yummy recipes for you to try out! But first, let's get to craftin'.

So, do you remember my spice rack in my kitchen? Oh, I never showed you that part of my kitchen because it was cluttered and ugly? Okay. So it's not that ugly. And changing a spice rack doesn't make that much of a difference. But I'm making progress. Here is a photo for you:

Woo hoo! So here's what I did. I wanted a spice rack that 1) didn't take up counter space 2) was unique and 3) displayed the spices and their colors. I had a bunch of extra small wood slices leftover from my rustic headboard, so I decided to make the spice rack out of wood.

SUPPLIES

  • 1 Can of Fast-Drying Polyurethane
  • 1 Can (16-32 oz. depending on how much wood you use) of Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner
  • Wood Stain of your choice
  • 2 Cloths - - - 1 for conditioning and 1 for staining
  • Wood  (I used 5 pieces of 4 inch wide x 2 inch thick boards - all cut the same length and 2 pieces of support board)
  • Wood Saw (You can also ask your local home improvement store to cut them for you, but make sure to go prepared with exact measurements)
  • Drill
  • A box of 1.5" Screws

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Measure the place where the spice rack will end up. Make sure the length and height of your wood will fit the desired space.
  2. Measure your spices - mine were tall enough that I could only make 2 rows instead of 3.
  3. Cut the wood if necessary.
  4. Line up the 3 boards (or however many you decided) that will make up the back of the spice rack. Turn them over and add 2 support boards - drilling 2 screws into each board.
  5. Standing the boards on their side, line up one of the shelves and screw from the backside into the shelf. Continue with the other shelf.
  6. Condition the wood with the Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner. Leave dry for at least 20 minutes.
  7. Stain boards. Let dry for 24 hours. *Side Note: Do not bring them inside. Wood stain will not come out of carpet or other fabrics.
  8. Once the boards are completely dry, spray them with Polyurethane. I recommend 3 coats with 30 minutes between each coat. (After they are dry, it is safe to bring them inside)
  9. Hang the spice rack - I used 2 heavy duty picture hangers that I attached to the support boards on the back.
