diy: stone welcome mat

Tomorrow is my last day of work at my 9-5 job. I'm a little nervous, but mostly excited about this new adventure of being full-time Maiedae. Savannah and I are headed down to Savannah, Georgia, on Saturday for our first Maiedae retreat! We are planning to do a lot of work and I'm anxious to get started!

Since I've been in a super Spring cleaning / decorating mood lately, I decided to try out the whole river rock / stone welcome mat project. Thinking it was going to be a simple project, I thought I would easily be able to finish it in an hour. Oh, how wrong I was. This project looks simple, but if you do it like I did, it takes a long time to complete. The two main reasons mine took longer than probably anyone else's were: 1) I chose to write "welcome" in cursive and 2) I picked the smallest rocks possible - which is good if you want to write a word and it be precise, but not so great if you want to complete it in 2013.

Besides taking over 4 hours to glue the rocks on, the project was a blast! And I love how it turned out.

To make one of your own, all you need are the following supplies:

  • Cabinet shelf liner (pick a dark color or one that matches your rocks)
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • River Rocks (I used aquarium rocks instead from my local pet store)
  • Something that no one else told me and I had to figure out - make sure to use a piece of cardboard or something stiff to put underneath your shelving liner or else the glue will seep through onto your carpet or table. Cut the cardboard the same size as the mat you want before beginning.
  • Optional: paint

I'd love to see pictures of how yours turns out if you do one!
