uniquely you: spending time alone

The older I get, the more I realize how important it is to treat others and yourself with respect. I was always taught to treat everyone with respect growing up, but the part I'm realizing more and more is that our minds and bodies need to be treated with respect as well. This (to me) means eating healthy, working hard, exercising, and taking time to de-stress and relax. It means investing your gifts and talents in a community. And it also means spending time alone.

Now, don't get me wrong, I am truly an extrovert. (Which I hear is weird for a blogger... but whatever) I love being around people. But too often I find myself only around people and thinking, "Wow, I can't remember the last time I spent time alone." These times are when I find myself at a loss for inspiration, exhausted, and feeling overburdened. You see, I think that everyone needs alone time...and often. Why? Because alone time provides a few things:

REST

First and foremost, alone time provides rest. It allows your mind to slow down and relax. You can sit in peace and quiet or write down your thoughts, but either way your mind is able to get away for a little bit. You can escape for a few moments from the to do lists and responsibilities. Typically, when I am alone, I turn off all media so that I know I will not be interrupted or distracted.

INSPIRATION

Alone time also provides inspiration. Because you're not thinking about the day's tasks or responsibilities, you have room to dream and think creatively. Your mind is a little more free to explore and it's a wonderful way to find inspiration. If you are inspired by nature, sit outside. If you are inspired by creative writing, get out a journal. If you are inspired by creativity, paint something or get your hands dirty. Do something that brings you joy.

PEACE

Many times when I'm anxious or feeling overwhelmed, a little bit of alone time is all I need. Because when I sit down, put all things aside, and truly rest, I am able to see things more clearly. I am able to find encouragement and a positive attitude because my rest brings hope.

Go and spend some alone time today. Think about what makes you "uniquely you." Celebrate and focus on the positives of life and the blessings you have been given. I promise it will make your day so much better!
