cheer: decorate for christmas

If I had to pick my favorite part of Christmas decorating, it would have to be the Christmas tree. As I've mentioned to you before, this was the first year that I've been able to have a real tree since I was around 12 years old. It was so fun to go pick out our tree and put it together. I also was given a lot of ornaments from my great grandmother's collection and some from my mom that she collected for me growing up. I love how special all the ornaments on my tree are.

As you may have noticed, I typically don't go for the "traditional" Christmas look. A lot of my ornaments are that way, but I love them because of their sentimentality. I typically love a natural look though, so when coming up with an idea for my Christmas tree skirt, I decided to use some cream colored burlap and linen canvas. I absolutely love how it turned out! Next year, I might add more layers to make it even more ruffly!

SUPPLIES

  • 4 yards of burlap or linen
  • 4' x 4' square of painter's canvas or canvas dropcloth (I found mine at Lowe's)
  • Hot glue gun & glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Optional: 2 yards of ribbon

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Fold your 4' x 4' square in half twice so that it measures 2' x 2'
  2. Cut a curved line along the unfolded edges.
  3. Cut out a quarter circle in the middle of the folded edges.
  4. Unfold it once and cut along one edge of the fold to the middle circle.
  5. With your burlap (or other) fabric, cut out 2 inch strips (cut along the long side so that strips are 4 yards long)
  6. Unfold your canvas circle completely and, beginning at the outer edge, hot gluing fabric strips (Note: I did this by hot gluing 4 -6 inches at a time. If you do any more, the glue dries too quickly) Continue to layer the strips until you have at least half way covered the canvas.
  7. Optional: Add ribbon ties on the ends to tie the skirt together. This is not necessary, but adds a nice touch.
